PTU 3.24.2 (very last version) Improvement suggestion regarding new altimeter UI

Hello there,

I just tried the very last PTU build and was delighted to see that UI team incorporated a radar altimeter information (0.24k R on attached screenshot).

Radar altimeter shows you how high you are above the terrain below your craft on real time, contrary to “standart” altimeter we have since years, which shows your altitude in relation of a (un)known planet/moon reference (above sea level on earth)

How does it work in SC ? Very simple, UI switches from “standart” altimeter to radar altimeter when “standart” altimeter value is below 500 feet (or 0.5k)

That features is really good !!!

But, if fighting in atmosphere by night (Microtech is a good exemple), turning around your adversaries, you don’t really see the ground, and it can easily ends in hitting a mountain.

To improve to new altimeter UI system, here is my suggestion @UI team: make the switching between “standart” altimeter information to radar altimeter information much earlier, like at 3000 feet “standart” altitude,

As usual, constructive feedbacks are always welcome ^^

We’re simply doing a ray cast from the ship origin downwards along the gravity vector. The ray is limited to 500m to avoid unnecessary physicalization of terrain. So basically the limited altitude range is a performance optimization. We can probably extend it a bit, I will check back with the physics and terrain tech teams on that.
